SoundScapes Project

Short Story ~ 2017, Oil on Canvas, 24 X 36 in.

The focus for this project was to bridge visual and audio art. The source references for each of these paintings is music that was composed and performed by my son, Theo Walentiny with his Octet at the South Orange performing Arts Center (SOPAC) in 2016. Each of these paintings is a response to and interpretation of the music. Corresponding audio recordings are available underneath each image.

These works explore the passage of time as ‘Seasons’ and the contrasting relationship between constants and change.  Nature’s Seasons explores the cycle within the natural world as the seasons change.  Life Seasons is an expression of the human life cycle.  Memory’s Seasons looks at the decay of memory and the loss of constancy. In the first two set of four, common vertical and linear images are replicated in the same exact placement as the constant and then surrounded by other forms and colors to represent the effect of change through time. In the last each image was created through a memory of the previous image.
